Oma LieselA housekeeping book

The old German way to a house that stays clean.

Open the windows every morning. Do a little every day instead of a lot once a month. Keep seven simple things on the shelf instead of thirty bottles. That's how my mother kept a house in Swabia, and how I've kept mine in Wisconsin since 1974. Now it's all written down: 198 pages, sixteen mixes, a thirty-day reset and a printable plan for your fridge.

A clean house has no smell at all. If you can smell your house, the house is telling you something.

Your towels smell sour after one shower?

It isn't the towels. It's the softener and the cold wash. Two washes fix it, and Chapter 9 shows you how.

The 21-stain chart page from the book

The book

One book. Seven basics. Sixteen mixes. A house that stays clean.

The kitchen, the bathroom, the laundry, the bedroom, the front step, and the troubles that follow you through a house: sour towels, white crust on the faucet, black caulk, a musty closet. Every method has exact amounts, what it works on and what it must never touch, plus an honest word when an old trick doesn't work.

About the author

Oma Liesel.

I was born in a small village in Swabia, in the south of Germany, where every house took its turn sweeping the street on Saturday and the windows were thrown open every morning, even in January. In 1974 I came to Wisconsin with one suitcase, married Walt, and kept house the way my mother taught me.

On my channel I show the old German ways of keeping a house: airing, the Saturday order, curd soap and vinegar, and the habits that keep a house from getting dirty in the first place. This book is all of it, written down in the right order, with every amount measured and every safety warning in place.

Ordnung ist das halbe Leben. Order is half of life.
